A powerful solar storm is threatening the state of Western Australia with severe sun poisoning.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology says an easterly jet stream is expected to continue to bring dry, warm air north from New South Wales over the next few days.
It’s expected to move through the South Island and then move south along the coast before hitting the central highlands, where it’s expected the severe sun damage will happen.
“This is a very serious event and we will be watching this very closely,” meteorologist Greg Stirling said.
The bureau says there is no risk of any direct sun exposure.
However, the storm could also bring a dangerous air quality risk from the storm.
It can cause an increased risk of skin irritation, and even breathing difficulties, from the sun.
The storm is expected be over in the next two to three days.
